MTS and National Instruments Join to Reduce Noise and Vibration Test Time

Product Integration Adds Measurements to Design Phase of Automotive and Aerospace NVH Applications

NEWS RELEASE -- May 6, 2003 -- Design engineers now can streamline noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) evaluations by integrating MTS Systems Corporation I-DEAS Pro and Sound Engineering families of noise and vibration analysis software with National Instruments LabVIEW graphical development software and family of dynamic signal acquisition hardware. The hardware integration and measurement capabilities of the LabVIEW platform combined with the design tool integration and analysis capabilities of MTS products help engineers easily incorporate measurements into the design phase of automotive and aerospace NVH applications to more easily validate designs.

"The integration between NI products and MTS NVH software and processes gives our customers access to a broad range of measurement capabilities for applications ranging from large-scale aircraft ground vibration test to automotive acoustic imaging," said Doug Marinaro, MTS vice president of software and consulting. "This enhanced capability adds to our extensive offering of practical noise and vibration engineering solutions, which enable our customers to make better design decisions to differentiate their products in the marketplace."

Using LabVIEW and NI PXI 24-bit sound and vibration hardware, engineers can acquire up to 5,000 simultaneously sampled channels of acoustic, vibration, noise and dynamic pressure measurement data. By integrating I-DEAS Pro, they can perform extensive on-line or post-processing analysis on this data with tools designed specifically for sound and vibration applications.

To incorporate these measurements into early stages of design, MTS I-DEAS Pro provides seamless integration with leading design and simulation tools such as MSC.Nastran and MSC.ADAMS. Engineers can use the measurements for material, component and system characterization, test-based empirical component models, model verification and model optimization. This helps engineers identify design limitations early in the design cycle and more easily validate designs prior to prototype construction, greatly reducing time to market and improving the usage of virtual and physical tests.

'The integration of the NI LabVIEW and MTS products empowers design engineers to better validate next-generation NVH designs," said Mihir Ravel, NI vice president of technology and corporate development.
"By combining the extensive experience of MTS in NVH design with our expertise in measurement and control, engineers can seamlessly measure, analyze and visualize noise and vibration earlier in the product development cycle. This is a significant step in our initiative to reduce design time by integrating LabVIEW into our customers' design flow."

The companies will demo their integrated solutions at SAE NVH 2003 in Traverse City, Michigan at the MTS booth (#509), the MTS Partner Suite (Tower Suite #1259) and the National Instruments booth (#513). Readers can download a set of example programs for integrating LabVIEW and I-DEAS Pro on the NI Web site and can find more information about integrating LabVIEW into the design flow by visiting ni.com/design.

About National Instruments
National Instruments (http://ni.com) is a technology pioneer and leader in virtual instrumentation -- a revolutionary concept that has changed the way engineers and scientists approach measurement and automation. Leveraging the PC and its related technologies, virtual instrumentation increases productivity and lowers costs for customers worldwide through easy-to-integrate software, such as the NI LabVIEW graphical development environment, and modular hardware, such as PXI modules for data acquisition, instrument control and machine vision. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, NI has more than 3,000 employees and direct operations in 40 countries. In 2002, the company sold products to more than 25,000 different companies in more than 80 countries around the world. For the past four consecutive years, FORTUNE magazine has named NI one of the 100 best companies to work for in America.
